Eavesdropping on the French [New Video]

In order to learn how to speak French, you must listen as much as possible – and listen to authentic, informal French that is used in everyday conversations.

This audio was recorded without the native French speakers’ prior knowledge for the most authentic speech possible. The transcript and language notes are included.

Random Snippets of a Conversation

This mp3 is slightly different from the others – it is once again eavesdropping, but this time it is only one side of a conversation, with pauses deleted. In fact, it is not much of a conversation, but just some online chatting while playing a game. It will give you examples of common spoken expressions, such as ouais (another way to say oui; compare yeah in English), ah bon ? (really?), de quoi ? (what?), etc. as well as some slang words that are considered vulgar and should not be used in polite company or in front of children, such as putain, enfoiré, and con.

Updates to Come in October

Summer vacation is over and I will be updating the podcast soon! Sorry for the extended break. I am working on recording more conversations and interviews, as well as creating listening exercises with other authentic materials. And I will eventually finish the transcripts for the eavesdropping and interview with Mamie mp3s. The sixth Informal French video will also be uploaded in October.

Don’t forget the mp3s, transcripts, and online listening exercises are available at the sister html page: French Listening Resources
