French Tutorial Index

If you're interested in learning French and Italian simultaneously, or using one language to help learn the other, I have started a French & Italian Comparative Tutorial. The Romance Languages page contains comparative vocabulary lists and verb conjugations for French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese. Similarly, I've also started a French & German Comparative Tutorial. The Germanic Lanuages page contains comparative vocabulary lists and verb conjugations for German, Dutch and Swedish.

French VII is designed for those who are moving to or living in France, while Informal French & Slang intends to teach the real spoken form of the language. I am (slowly) adding mp3s to aid with pronunciation, recorded by a native speaker. Go to the mp3s directory for the current list.

Champs-Elysées

Champs-Elysées is an audio magazine for intermediate to advanced French learners. It is a subscription program that includes the magazine, an hour-long CD or cassette, plus an optional study supplement (Champs-Elysées Plus) . It is designed to improve your vocabulary, grammar and listening comprehension, as well as your cultural understanding of the French-speaking world. Each magazine includes about a dozen topics ranging from politics and economics to tourism and geography to literature, poetry, music, film, etc.

I highly recommend this program, especially if you do not have access to materials that provide spoken French. Each magazine contains the full text/transcript on the even-numbered page, and the vocabulary on the odd-numbered page. There are several notes in English at the end that explain the people and places mentioned. The study supplements include audio flashcards (repetition of phrases from the text), as well as written exercises and translations of certain extracts.

The program is also available in German - Schau ins Land, Italian - Acquerello Italiano and Spanish - Puerta del Sol.

If you're interested in buying books to supplement your French studies, book recommendations are below.

Book Recommendations. Language textbooks are rather expensive and generally only include the formal, written language. You will need more exposure to the real spoken language if you want to be become fluent. In addition to the Champs Elysees audio program, as well as a good dictionary, grammar review, and book of verb conjugations, I have used the following books and materials for learning French:
